A couple of weeks ago, I was invited to a ceremony by a group called the Knights of the Lord's Table. I didn't know much about the group, just that it was a part of the new church I was doing youth ministry for (Christ Church Cathedral in Sherman) and that it was a men's ministry geared towards mentoring young men.
I have to say, I was amazed at the ceremony. The young man being "graduated" to manhood was eighteen and from comments made from the men there, had been a part of the church his entire life. Every man there had good things to say about the young man.
That wasn't the amazing part though.
First of all, I couldn't believe how many men were there. The church isn't a very large church, but there were at least twenty men there. I haven't ever seen that kind of turn out for this kind of ministry in any church I've ever been involved with. Honestly, i haven't seen a ministry quite like this in any church I've been involved with.
Second, these men obviously had a connection with this young man. They weren't just there in a show of numbers. There were there to stand behind this young man and support him.
One of the things that has been difficult for me and my family in doing ministry is how often we have had to move. Every time we change towns or change churches, our friends - and for the most part, our support system has changed. My older boys did not really have a support system like this young man had. Men who they had known for their whole lives, or even for very long, who were speaking into their lives and supporting them. I want Patrick to have this kind of support.

The Knights of the Lord's Table is an organization that is dedicated to the purpose of training boys to become Godly men. our society has redefined what it is to be a man, discouraging masculinity and considering manliness obsolete.
In the media, men are either emasculated and made to be comic figures or portrayed as inhumane, utterly selfish, violent machines.
This has caused some great confusion among the males of our society. Some men have reacted by becoming passive, abdicating their responsibilities, while others have done the opposite, becoming domineering, overbearing and abusive.
The only true image of manhod is found in the life of Jesus Christ. The Knights of the Lord's Table is dedicated to teaching boys to be everything the Creator desires in a man.

I plan on supporting this group and getting my son involved in it as well. I am going to encourage the men of St John's to get involved as well, especially those with young sons. I think it would be great for them to learn the program and spread it to other churches.
