SugarSync |
- Free storage – SugarSync: 5 GB, Dropbox: 2 GB
- Dropbox allows you to share files up to 1 GB via public links or email. SugarSync limits it to 25 MB.
- SugarSync has native support for music playback on the web and for smartphones. Dropbox requires a third-party app, such as groovyBox.
- Many users report that Dropbox has faster upload / sync speeds than SugarSync.
Ease of Use
Dropbox wins here. When you load it up, it creates a folder called "DropBox" on your computer. It also puts a little icon in your system tray. Whatever you put in that folder is synced to the cloud. If you have DropBox installed on more than one computer, it also syncs all files between the two computers. This means you have all contents of that folder on both computers... which can be helpful or redundant, depending on the file. You can also access any of the files in the DropBox folder with an iPhone or iPad app or just using a browser.
SugarSync is a little more complicated, but not really. You choose which folder or folders you wish to sync. Actually it is a much better system because you can choose to sync those folders across computers (like DropBox) or not. Here is a snapshot of my setup:
You can see that I have my Mobile Photos, my 247 folder (which is ALL my youth group files) and my "Magic Briefcase" synced between my iMac and my MacBook. (The Magic Briefcase is like the DropBox folder. Anything you put in that folder is copied to both computers. Handy if you want to send yourself something without having to email it or FTP it to yourself)
The other folders below are not synced between the two computers. They are just backed up on the cloud. If I were to lose the harddrive those files are on, I would have a backup on the cloud. It also allows me to access those files (actually any of the files) from anywhere I have internet access or from my iPhone or iPad app.
Gigs per Dollar
For my money though, I gotta go with SugarSync. Literally... You get more free space if you want to go free, and they have lower priced premium space. $5 a month will get you 30 Gigs of space on the Cloud. Thats the best deal out there. Dropbox's least expensive option is $10 a month for 50 Gigs. For $10 a month you can get 60GB on SugarSync. I am currently on the $5 a month plan with SugarSync.
Referral Programs
Both services offer extra free space if you sign up your friends. DropBox offers 250MB per friend (double that if you are a student). If you want to sign up for DropBox, you can use my link and we both get the extra 250MB. DropBox Referral
SugarSync doubles that. They offer 500MB for both parties AND if the person who signs up using your link gets a paid account you both get an extra 10GB of space. You really can't lose with that!! If you want to sign up for SugarSync and give us both extra space, use this link:SugarSync Referral
Hope you give one or both a try! If you have any questions about either, you can email me.
